Edwardes Lake Park Changing Places

The new Changing Places and amenities building at Edwardes Lake Park has been designed to promote inclusivity, accessibility and safety within typically uninviting public spaces. The project consists of a Changing Places facility, 1x accessible toilet, 1x ambulant toilet and 2x all gender cubicles.

The design has been developed in response to its environmental context, with two key viewpoints through the site framed by the building. The design has a heightened level of passive surveillance, with all communal areas visible from multiple vantage points. Able to be entered from three sides, there is no ‘back’ of building, increasing safety and offering a positive impact within the park. Traditional bathroom ‘lobby’ spaces have been omitted and replaced with external basins.

Externally, the material is recycled blackbutt battens which have been recycled from timber purlins in the Hard Yakka factory. Yellow perforated steel sheeting emphasises viewlines and creates warm internal transition spaces, while assisting in place making and creating a memorable environment.
